Here’s the trailer to “Lord, Save Us from Your Followers.”
I watched this a couple years ago with some friends (Mimi, Jonathan, and…?). We had a really good discussion about this afterwards. I forgot how, but I just stumbled upon this documentary again, and I re-watched some of my favorite parts. There’s a segment on Sister Mary Timothy that always makes me tear up:
“…Now I don’t know what you think of Tim, but would it make a difference to you to learn that his mother died when he was four, his dad and stepmother were habitual drug users, and the first time he had sex, at age sixteen, he contracted HIV? Today, I call Timmy my friend. He reminds me that life and people are complicated, compassion should be given and not earned, and that everyone has the rest of the story.”
Dr. Tony Campolo, also featured in this documentary, recounts of a tragedy that happened to someone from his high school. He was the keynote speaker at a conference that I went to with Peer Counseling and I heard him speak about this devastating subject before, but each time, it’s as heartbreaking as the next. It’s a consequence he has to live with.
I feel like everyone should watch this. (It’s on Netflix and YouTube!)
“It’s one thing to stand in church mumbling the words to an old hymn and it’s another entirely to get down on your knees and wash the feet of a homeless person.”
